Persistently high humidity, however, can lead to warped wood, peeling paint, and mold and mildew. Managing humidity levels is important because the amount of moisture in the air impacts your health, comfort, and belongings. When it isn’t too dry or too humid, the air feels comfortable, your skin and sinuses are healthy, and the wood and materials throughout your house stay in good shape. Too far to either extreme results in physical discomfort and possible damage around your home.

Because outdoor humidity fluctuates with the seasons and day-to-day weather, your realistic target for indoor relative humidity will drift throughout the year. Depending on the weather, you will also need to apply different tools and strategies to reach your ideal humidity level inside.
In much of the continental United States, the challenge in late spring and summer is keeping humidity levels down. This is because warm outdoor air can hold more moisture. Use air conditioning, stand-alone dehumidifiers, or a whole-house dehumidifier to keep moisture in check. There’s no need to strive for 30% relative humidity in the middle of July. Aim for the higher end of the ideal range, around 40% to 50%.
In the fall and winter, the challenge is usually managing excessively dry air. Cold air is naturally drier, being less able to hold moisture, and home heating systems dry it out further. Use a humidifier to bring the indoor relative humidity to between 30% to 40%. You don’t need to push much higher than that. In fact, bringing indoor humidity to 50% or higher in cold weather introduces the risk of condensation collecting on the windows.
Also bear in mind that humidity levels within the home tend to vary across different rooms and locations. The air in bathrooms and kitchens usually has more moisture because of steam from showers, boiling water, dishwashers, and cooking vapors and should have adequate ventilation. Basement and crawl space humidity levels tend to creep higher than the rest of the house as well, and these locations may benefit from dedicated dehumidifiers.
Measuring the relative humidity in your home doesn’t require any complex equipment. All you need is a hygrometer, a small and inexpensive tool that you can find at virtually any hardware store. Modern hygrometers have digital displays and often measure indoor temperature as well.
Hygrometers are inexpensive enough to warrant buying several for your home. Place one in each of your most frequently used living spaces and anywhere that is prone to high humidity levels, like the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and basement. If you already have a dedicated dehumidifier, check that the appliance doesn’t already display the ambient relative humidity, which would negate the need for a separate hygrometer in that location.
Track the readings from the multiple hygrometers over the course of several days, noting how the measurements correspond with outdoor weather. If you opt for smart hygrometers with Wi-Fi connectivity, you may be able to easily curate an electronic log. Once you have a baseline understanding of which rooms run more humid than others, you can determine when to employ a humidifier vs. dehumidifier, identify which parts of the home to focus on, and apply other tailored strategies to keep your home humidity levels in the ideal range.
Most homes can benefit from some simple and straightforward methods for wrangling indoor humidity levels. Here are the most effective strategies:
Sometimes there are more serious issues that contribute to high indoor humidity. These could include plumbing leaks, water intrusion in the basement, poor drainage, and HVAC breakdowns. If you struggle to keep the damp air in check even after employing the strategies outlined above, you should schedule an HVAC inspection or broader home inspection to identify problems that can be professionally mitigated.
In the summer, use air conditioning and dehumidifiers to reach 40% to 50% relative humidity inside. Aim for 30% to 40% in the winter, employing humidifiers as needed to compensate for the drying action of cold winter air and artificial heating.
Wood is naturally reactive to the moisture in the air and will expand in humid weather and contract in dry weather. Prolonged exposure to high humidity can damage wooden furniture and flooring. Over time, hardwood floors may buckle, drawers and doors will stick or jam, and wooden furniture may warp or become less sturdy. Dampness can also invite mold, mildew, and musty odors that are hard to eliminate from upholstery.
A hygrometer is reasonably inexpensive, and it's the best tool for monitoring indoor humidity levels. But if a hygrometer is unavailable, you can keep an eye out for mold, mildew, musty odors, peeling wallpaper, warped wood, condensation on windows, and water-stained drywall. You can also use your own comfort as a proxy. If you feel like the air is sticky, clammy, and uncomfortable, your home and belongings are likely affected as well.
Yes, air conditioning can control the humidity in your home. As the AC cools the air, it naturally extracts moisture from the air. Some units even have a dry mode that pulls moisture from the air without actively cooling the room.
