Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and normally alluded to as Washington or D.C., is the capital of the United States. Established after the American Revolution as the seat of administration of the recently autonomous nation. Washington was named after George Washington, the first President of the United States and Founding Father. The city mechanized streetcars when the “Eckington and Soldiers Home Railway” launched in 1888. Washington’s urban arrangement was expanded all throughout the District over the next several decades. Georgetown was formally added to the City of Washington in 1895. Washington was the most prominent city in our country to experience urban restoration as a feature of the “City Beautiful Movement” which occured in the mid 1900’s. Winters are normally crisp with light snow and yearly snowfall averaging 15.5 inches, while summers are sweltering and damp. Spring and fall are mellow to warm, and fall is relatively comfortable. Winter temperatures hover at or around 38 °F from mid-December to mid-February. Summers in July will range from approximately 79.8 °F and up, and normal day by day relative humidity hovers at or around 66%, which can cause moderate individual uneasiness. The mix of warmth and mugginess in the late spring brings occasional rainstorms, some of which once in a while may even produce tornadoes in the territory.
